HIV Vaccines: Ethics, Science and Hope

A recent study found that men who participated in an AIDS vaccine trial were more likely to be infected with HIV. The trial was stopped early, the New York Times reports.

The problem, according to vaccine specialist Dr. Ann Duerr, was primarily among men who had two very specific similarities: they were uncircumcised and had previously had common colds that were caused by the virus used to make the vaccine.

These men were two to four times more likely to become infected from the vaccine, the study found. Still, there was no indication of why it happened.
